“I just bet on myself.”
Bodie Nowak describes an unconventional decision he made while navigating the criminal justice system.
He had the possibility of leaving jail earlier, but doing so would have meant remaining under supervision for a much longer period.
Instead, he accepted the possibility of spending additional months incarcerated.
When a psychiatrist later heard the story, even he was surprised by the choice.
Bodie’s reasoning was not that the harder path was somehow better. It was that, at that point in his life, he believed he could tolerate a defined period of hardship better than years of feeling that his decisions were controlled by someone else.
It became an early example of a mindset that would follow him later in life:
Accept the consequences. Take responsibility for the decision. And bet on your ability to figure out what comes next.
